Matthew Libby, DO, FAAFP
Founder, Owner, Family Physician
Professional Biography
The word “doctor” is derived from the latin docere, which means “to teach.” Dr. Libby is a life-long learner, teacher, and servant-leader. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, he soon found his calling teaching in a wide variety of settings—from working with underserved youth in after-school programs, to tutoring at elite private schools, to managing a laboratory of physics demonstrations for university lectures.
After a few years, Dr. Libby returned to school to pursue his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the University of New England, where he served as a teaching assistant, tutor, volunteer, and leader in a number of student organizations. One of the most formative experiences was caring for farm workers in a mobile clinic, during the blueberry harvest in Maine—work that he has since reconnected to and continues with. His activities in school earned him several awards, including the Sauter Award for Graduate with Distinction: “For possessing those qualities the faculty would seek in their family physician.”
Dr. Libby went on to complete a residency in Family Medicine at the Tufts-affiliated Lawrence Family Medicine Residency, nationally known for being the first Teaching Health Center program and training top family physicians and leaders. In residency, he received teaching awards from both the faculty and junior residents.
Upon completion of training, Dr. Libby moved to Cape Cod to serve as a National Health Service Corps Scholar, practicing Family Medicine in federally-designated primary care shortage area. In clinics from Wellfleet to Hyannis, to farms in rural Maine, and via telehealth across many states, Dr. Libby has cared for people of all ages and from all walks of life. He is experienced in primary, preventive, and urgent care, management of complex chronic conditions, and office procedures. As an Osteopathic physician, Dr. Libby can incorporate Osteopathic Treatment for patients who are interested. He is currently pursuing further training in lifestyle medicine.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Libby has held executive and director-level leadership roles in several healthcare organizations locally and nationally, from community health centers to the health tech startup space. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Academy of Family Physicians.
Dr. Libby is an alumnus of the Harvard-affiliated Linde Fellowship in Primary Care Leadership at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. In 2024, he was among the first cohort of physicians in the country to earn a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Healthcare Administration, Leadership, and Management from the American Board of Family Medicine.
He is also Instructor in Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School. He has taught and mentored numerous health professions students, residents, and early-career clinicians over the years, and given lectures at regional and national conferences, speaking about practice improvement and models of primary care delivery.
Outside of work, Dr. Libby enjoys cooking, hiking, camping, photography, and spending time with his three children and his partner, Kelly—a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with her own independent practice co-located within the Lotus Primary Care clinic space in Brewster.
